Arden astronomers, the Mayans interpreted the movements of celestial bodies as divine existences traveling among Earth, the underworld, and other celestial destinations. Since gods and goddesses were greatly involved in human affairs, the Mayans heavily studied every aspect of the sky, especially the sun and the moon.
The sun was of utmost importance to the Mayans, who were experts at predicting solar phenomena and based their calendar system on solar cycles. The moon was one of the most enigmatic elements of Maya mythology, in which the moon goddess Ixchel was in charge of the creation of life.
Product Design
The front designs of this coin pair depict these two crucial motifs. The symbol on the back is known as the Hunab Ku (or the Galactic Butterfly). Often depicted as a spiral galaxy, it resembles the yin-yang symbol and similarly represents the harmonious merging of opposites, the duality in all things, and the one and only God. The Hunab Ku is therefore a symbol of order, balance, wholeness, unity, and the conservation of energy in the universe.
