This collection draws inspiration from Journey to the West, a 16th-century Chinese classic attributed to Wu Cheng'en. At once an action-packed adventure story, a humorous satire of Chinese bureaucracy, and a source of spiritual insight, the novel is an extended account of the legendary pilgrimage of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who traveled to Central Asia and India in retrieval of some Buddhist sutras.
