Four of Cups

Element: Water
The design of this card features the renowned physicist, Isaac Newton. He is depicted sitting under an apple tree, deeply engrossed in his reading, completely absorbed in his own world. When an apple falls on his head, the Law of Universal Gravitation is born.
In the original Rider–Waite imagery, the man is similarly absorbed in his own thoughts, blind to the cup being offered before him—perhaps due to dissatisfaction with his current situation or uncertainty about the future. The hand from the cloud holding a cup also symbolizes a new opportunity or possibility.
When the Four of Cups appears, it signals a need for introspection and contemplation. Opportunities may already be right in front of us—sometimes a change in perspective leads to unexpected breakthroughs.
