The Lovers
Element: Air
The design of The Lovers card is inspired by Michelangelo’s fresco The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Eve and Adam are embracing each other, happily immersed in the paradise of apples. The serpent on the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and an angel are watching nearby. The serpent is working hard to tempt them into picking the apple, while the angel waits for them to take a bite, ready to expel them from Eden. Eve holds an apple, wanting to share the “delicacy” with Adam. Because they ate the forbidden fruit, they are completely naked, and cat tails have sprouted from their bodies, exposing their most primal nature. The design of this card considers the polarity of the Lovers card. Although the Lovers represents romance and beauty, excessive indulgence can have the opposite effect, ultimately leading to the angel expelling Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.
