Element: Air

The inspiration for the Justice card comes from Egyptian mythology. The deceased would arrive at the palace of Osiris—the Hall of Judgment—to undergo the final trial known as the “Weighing of the Heart.” In ancient Egyptian beliefs, the soul and heart were often seen as one. The deceased’s heart would be placed on one side of the scale, while the feather of Ma’at, goddess of truth and justice, was placed on the other. If the heart was heavier than the feather, it meant the soul was impure and would be devoured by the monster Ammit. If the heart and feather were equal in weight, the soul was deemed pure and would be granted eternal life. In this depiction, the monster Ammit is represented by a serpent, while the magical cat Bart takes the form of Anubis, the god of the afterlife, adjusting the scale for accuracy.
