The Chariot
The dung beetle holding the sun mirrors the winged orb depicted on the chariot in the original Rider-Waite deck. This is the scarab, which in ancient Egypt symbolized the sun god and represented rebirth, protection, and strength. The Chariot corresponds to Cancer, whose ruling planet is the Moon. Combined, they express the idea that “the sun (outer image) protects the moon (inner consciousness).”
Since the Chariot corresponds to Cancer, the crab itself is used as the vehicle. The black and white pincers reflect the dual-colored sphinxes in the original image.
The armored hand aligns with Cancer’s nature: hard on the outside, soft on the inside. Precisely because it is soft within, it requires outer protection.
The background features numerous alchemical symbols, referencing the patterns on the Charioteer’s armor in the Rider-Waite deck.
