The Lovers
Connecting the white dots forms the constellation of Gemini. The background is filled with clouds, evoking the Air element, resonating with Gemini and creating a sense that “they are now in the clouds, in a moment of happiness.” But the moment Eve bites the apple is when they fall from the dream. Still, is waking necessarily a bad thing?
The male hand reaches to touch the female hand, but the female hand does not notice—it longs only for the apple. This mirrors the original Rider-Waite image, where the man gazes at the woman while the woman gazes at the angel. Does this suggest that the two lovers have fundamentally different desires? Or perhaps they see different things altogether?
The apple and serpent represent the element of Eden. Though Eve was born from Adam’s body, the moment she touched the earth, she became her own person. They come from the same source but flow in different directions—yet they remain intimately inseparable.
