The Empress

You nourish every soul with immense life force. You illuminate all things in the world with your inclusive heart. Every branch and vein within you gives birth to beautiful life that will bloom and bear fruit. You are the compassionate mother of all beings. Your towering presence will always watch over me.

Tall trees most fully express primal motherhood. In many places, trees symbolize harvest and abundance and are objects of worship. Without the protection of Mother Nature, we could not survive. Caring for the environment is the responsibility of every being who lives under her shelter. Tree spirits have held great importance in the religious history of many cultures. People believed that every tree had a soul. In ancient East Africa, cutting down a coconut tree was considered the same as killing one’s mother. In Germany and France, during corn harvests, farmers decorated branches with corn ears and brought entire trees home, believing that tree spirits governed lush growth and would bless the household with prosperity. Many small creatures live upon trees, relying on them just as we rely on her.
