Four of Pentacles
Element: Earth
This card is inspired by Eugénie Grandet by French novelist Honoré de Balzac. Monsieur Grandet is a wealthy and respected merchant, infamous for his stinginess. He hoards wealth, refuses to buy vegetables or meat, and subjects his family to frugality even in winter. The card’s image shows his underground vault, filled with the money he’s spent a lifetime accumulating—his pose clutching a coin mirrors the Rider–Waite Four of Pentacles. While this card represents growing wealth and saving, excessive possessiveness can lead to becoming a miser, just like Grandet.
