I arrived at the snow mountains and, by accident, stepped on an ice ridge that cracked. The sound startled a giant lion from its sleep; the icy armor rising along its back was seeping a blue glow. Just as I stood at a loss, a pale-yellow halo sliced through the biting curtain of wind. A fairy drifted down gracefully and touched the lion’s bridge of the nose with her fingertip—where she touched, the hard ice melted into a trickling stream. The lion bowed low and, in that warmth, sank back into slumber.
