The last memory I have from that world is opening a long-sealed box beside my bed. When I looked up again, the familiar room had shed itself into unfamiliar colors. In the distance, the mountains drifted with a deep-blue halo, like the breathing of some deity in sleep. A butterfly hovered before my eyelashes, leading me all the way to the edge of a cliff. There was a point of light, hanging three inches beyond the cliff—like a spark of starlight forgotten in time and space. Whether it was some force, or simply curiosity, I reached out and touched it with my fingertip. The entire night suddenly split in two, and before my eyes was a brand-new world!
