Five of Swords

Conflict · Argument · Pyrrhic Victory

All the fives in the Minor Arcana indicate conflict, but the nature of that conflict differs by suit. In the case of Swords—an outward-facing, masculine element—the conflict is intellectual and ideological. Unlike the fleeting disagreements of the Five of Wands, the Five of Swords reflects deep-seated clashes of worldview and beliefs.

Here, the victor is drawn as relentless and aggressive, while the defeated walk away in silent refusal, unwilling to accept the victor’s view despite losing the argument. This card represents the kind of win that carries no true satisfaction—where even victory leads to isolation and division.

The sword handles feature the symbols for Venus and Aquarius.
