Hanawa weaves fragments of the past into new stories. His work combines a retro aesthetic, strong contrasts of color and shade, dense detail that heightens the sense of depth, and a light touch of surrealism.
Drawn to vintage art, he works largely in pencil, using its roughness and ambiguity to reflect the randomness of life. "True beauty is vague and bewildering, urging us to observe with patience," he says.
