Three of Swords
Astrology: Moon in Libra | Element: Air | Season: Autumn
Butterflies are beautiful beings that people long to possess. Some admire their lightness and graceful flight, then capture them and place them in a box, offering flowers and fruit, believing they have given everything the butterfly could need. Yet the butterfly still longs to fly in the open sky. In order to keep this fragile blue beauty, someone pierces its wings with fine needles, fixing it inside the box. There, it has everything—except flight. And without flight, it seems it has nothing at all…
Symbolism:
Butterfly: Corresponding to the heart in traditional Rider–Waite imagery, the butterfly represents both body and soul—the core essence of the individual. Pierced wings signify emotional wounds and physical pain, loss, loneliness, and sorrow, as well as injuries that feel impossible to heal.
Box: A symbol of restriction and oppression, echoing the storm clouds in traditional imagery—an environment that confines and suffocates.
Three Needles: Represent disharmony in thought, communication, and action, bringing pain, conflict, and emotional injury.
Shattered Glass: The possibility of breaking the current state—suggesting release, change, and a chance to reclaim joy and growth through appropriate expression.
Red Ribbon: Symbolizes control, restraint, and emotional domination.
Berries: Represent former sweetness or temptation—pleasant memories or desires that may also serve as catalysts for harm.
Rose: A symbol of joy and vitality that fades alongside the butterfly. If the current state continues, withered stagnation and loss become the only outcome.
Upright:
Sorrow, loss, painful separation, delay, grief, despair, trials of the heart, emotional or tangible loss.
Personality: Emotionally sensitive and vulnerable, undergoing deep pain, unable to conceal inner suffering, in need of time to heal, maintaining clear awareness of harm, holding dignity amid pain, capable of enduring hardship.
Relationship: Betrayal and emotional injury, heartbreak or separation, broken promises, unavoidable emotional truths, heartbreak paired with clarity, a necessary period of solitary healing.
Career/Studies: Professional disappointment and setbacks, the pain of project failure, betrayal by colleagues or partners, unavoidable acceptance of failure, learning and growth through adversity, a difficult phase in career development.
Finances: The pain of financial loss, lessons from failed investments, confronting economic reality, losses caused by misplaced trust, learning financial wisdom through failure.
Advice: Do not leave the needle lodged in the wound. Allow yourself to feel and express grief, but do not remain trapped in pain forever. Seek appropriate ways to release and restore yourself. Trust that time can heal wounds, and draw from this experience the strength to grow—and to fly again.
Reversed:
Heartbreak, lingering hurt, betrayal, loneliness, emotional isolation, wounds that resist healing, emotional imbalance, self-suppression.
Personality: Gradually emerging from the shadow of pain, learning forgiveness and release, beginning emotional repair, willing to open the heart again, gaining wisdom from suffering, restoring emotional courage.
Relationship: Healing emotional wounds, forgiving past hurts, moving beyond heartbreak, rebuilding trust, gradual emotional recovery, liberation from painful relationships.
Career/Studies: Rising again after failure, repairing professional trauma, learning to forgive workplace harm, rebuilding confidence, transforming failure into motivation.
Finances: Recovering from financial loss, correcting flawed money beliefs, rebuilding confidence, learning from failed investments.
Advice: Leave environments that limit and harm you. Seek professional support if needed, and actively participate in the healing process. Learn to forgive and let go. Allow pain to become nourishment for growth, rather than a burden carried forever.
